For appropriate reach elements should be located between 20'' and 40'' off the floor, and no more than 20'' deep. These include lighting switches, electrical outlets, thermostat, window blind/treatments' controls, appliances, stowage, hardware and drawers. Open floor plans work best for those in wheelchairs. Low-nap carpeting and non-slip smooth floor surfaces prevent tripping and are easier to use a cane, walker and wheelchair on. For elderly with deficient vision it is recommended that flooring with consistent color shades are used and any transitions be clearly identified.
